Empowering Young Futures
Independent Horizons began as a shared dream between Karen and Gary, inspired by their combined decades of experience and a belief that every young person deserves more than just a place to sleep. Karen has spent over 20 years supporting children, young people and families.
Together, Karen and Gary imagined a warm, welcoming home where young people feel supported and encouraged, and where the team feel just as valued and inspired.
Their vision grew into a home filled with kindness, laughter and genuine interest in each young person’s goals. A home where achievements are celebrated, challenges are supported and someone is always ready to listen. Karen’s knowledge of young people’s journeys combined with Gary’s ability to build strong teams shaped Independent Horizons into a home rooted in respect, inclusion, collaboration and trust.
As a married couple of more than 16 years, they understand the importance of teamwork and resilience, and their grown children have supported them throughout this journey.
Independent Horizons is more than a service. It is a home built on compassion and a belief in every young person’s potential, where young people feel safe to be themselves, where independence grows step by step and where hope, fun and opportunity are part of everyday life.
This Is Not Housing, It’s a Home
More than just accommodation, we offer a comfortable and happy home. Our spaces are designed to be warm, welcoming, and a place where young people can feel safe, build friendships, and develop a sense of belonging.
From the moment young people arrive, they are encouraged to take ownership of their space, shaping it into a reflection of who they are. We provide communal areas for social connection, alongside private spaces that offer comfort and security.
With a dedicated team available around the clock, young people always have someone to turn to. Whether it’s emotional support, learning life skills, or preparing for independence, we’re here to make their transition into adulthood as smooth as possible.
Who We Are
Karen
Karen is our Registered Manager, Nominated Individual, and a Registered Social Worker with over 20 years of experience supporting children, young people and their families.
Having spent much of her career with Norfolk Children’s Services, including managing a Life Beyond Care team, she has led countless young people through the exciting (and sometimes challenging) steps toward independence and beyond.
At Independent Horizons, Karen brings her professional expertise and genuine warmth to create a home where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued. She is the kind of manager who always makes time to listen, think, and understand what each young person really wants for their future, then works alongside them to make it happen.
What makes Karen special is her belief that every young person has incredible potential and that with the right support, encouragement, and a little laughter along the way, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. Whether she is planning a movie night, helping someone practice for an interview, or celebrating a personal win, Karen’s goal is simple: to make sure everyone at Independent Horizons feels heard, hopeful, and ready for what comes next.
Gary
Gary’s our director, he’s the one who keeps everything running smoothly around here – from paying the bills to making sure the lights stay on and the Wi-Fi’s working (vital stuff, obviously!). If something’s broken, he’ll find a person to fix it.
But Gary’s not just about the practical stuff – he’s got a brilliant business brain and loves helping you plan, budget, and figure out how to smash your goals, whatever they may be. You’ll find him around the home or in the office making sure everything’s in tip-top shape – and if he’s not there, he’s probably off for a walk to the beach with a coffee in hand.
From the moment you walk through the door, Gary’s in your corner, cheering you on every step of the way.
Our Pets
Independent Horizons wouldn’t be the same without our amazing furry family members who often come to visit, Millie, Max, Bear and Ada. They’re all part of our team (risk assessed, of course!) and love bringing a bit of fun, calm and company into everyday life.
Millie, Max and Bear are our gentle house dogs who come along with Karen and Gary, friendly, affectionate, and total pros at making new mates. You’ll often find them sunbathing by the window, sniffing out biscuits, or doing their best “house hoover” impression when someone drops a crumb! They love slow walks, cuddles on the sofa, and joining in on quiet evenings or beach trips.
Then there’s Ada, Mikey’s lively dog, full of energy and always ready for an adventure! Ada loves long walks, exploring the park, and chasing her favourite ball (usually with Mikey not far behind). She’s friendly, playful and guaranteed to make you laugh with her goofy, tail-wagging energy.
Whether it’s Millie keeping you company while you watch a film, Bear snoring too loudly, Max waiting for a treat, or Ada bringing her joyful chaos on a Sunday walk – our dogs are always around to make Independent Horizons feel even more like home.
